Trucker steers his way through FIRST Norfolk Highland Games to haul the title back home to Yorkshire.

A Truck Driver from Dewsbury West Yorkshire Dave Thornton has scooped the new title of Norfolk Highland Games champion at the National Country live show at the showground this weekend.

Athletes from the around the country descended on Norwich, including Guinness world record holder Nicky Walters and 3rd Wales strongest woman.

In the mens line up saw Scott maw (Hulls strongest man), Scott Mark Litchfield former Sheffield and 2 times Highland games champion, Mark Thomson 3rd Yorkshires Strongest man, Shaun Blairs from Stoke – Rotherham Highland games champion.

Elite athlete in the under 105kg (16.5 stone bodyweight) Matt Cole came all the way from Kent and is current 3 times UK’s strongest man in that division competed on the first day.

Matt was the first to take on the new custom made atlas stones for the show weighing in at 150kg (23 stones) and 190kg (29 stones) which he lifted and held both for 45 seconds.

But it was Dave who remained consistent across the 12 highland games events which took place over two days to take the win.

Dave, who also won the Peak District highland games in August of this year and holding the stone hold record, was a force to be reckoned with in the throwing events such as the ‘tossing of the caber’, stone throw and hammer throw which scored valuable points.

The 110kg log press was dominated by two big hitters Scott Mark Litchfield (10 reps) and Scott Maw 11 reps lifting 18 stone above the head as many times as they could. Novice, Neil Parker learning the events and happy to finally ‘toss’ the caber after taking advice from some of the more experienced athletes.

Shaun Blairs, Rotherham Highland Games Champion on the log press

Shaun Blairs, always a surprise package, having a fantastic showing on the log with 10 reps and Mark Thomson hitting 3rd quickest on the stone carry, Matt Cole in first place with a blistering time of 15.49 seconds carrying a 150kg stone over 40 metres!

The show was wrapped up with 2 tug of wars where the strong kids of Norfolk stepped up and took the strongmen on over 3 rounds. 25 children lined up showing grit and determination to drag the strongmen over the line spurred on by a partisan crowd.

Feeling the aches and pains from 12 events and 2 days of highland games the competitors took time out to have pictures with the crowd whilst the medals and trophy was presented by Matt Upson, from the organisers of the National country live show – Aztec

Andrew Picken and Mark Anglesea, co founders of Man Beast strongman events based in Doncaster who run the competition, commented ' this new competition fit the country theme well, using mostly natural objects to display strength aswell as classic highland games events.

Final results were;

1st place Dave Thornton

2nd place Scott Mark Litchfield

3rd place Scott Maw

4th Shaun Blairs

5th Mark Thomson

6th Neil  Parker
